Main lobby of the Palace of Monserrate
Octagonal atrium which has in the center an Alabaster fountain. The domed roof is made of wood decorated with stucco.

The palace of Monserrate was transformed in 1856, as the summer residence for the Cook family, by the English architect James T. Knowles. Reconstructed from the ruins of a neo-Gothic mansion, originaly constructed by Gerard de Visme, it's a unique testament of the eclectic spirit of the eighteen hundreds.

Gerard de Visme - British businessman, the concession holder of the import of Brazil wood, responsible for building the first palace of Monserrate.

William Beckford (1760-1844) Writer novelist, art critic, bibliophile and eccentric builder, known for being the richest young Englishman of his time.

Francis Cook (1817-1901) English millionaire (textile trade), owner of one of the largest collections of British art and first Viscount of Monserrate. Was responsible for the design of the current romantic garden and Palace of Monserrate, as the summer estate of the family.

Distinguished visitor
Lord Byron (1788-1824) Anglo-Scottish poet. Celebrated figure of the Romantic movement, recognized as one of the great European poets. Visits the estate in 1809 and sings its beauty in the poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage"
